The Relationship between Preoperative Anxiety and Postoperative Pain Responses of Surgical Patients

Abstract
This study was carried out to provide a basic data for nursing intervention of pain_ relief by evaluating the relationship between preoperative anxiety and postoperative pain responses.
The subjects were a total of 76, who were admitted to GS ward at C university hospital in K city, from May S to August 20, 1987.
Interviews, chart reviews and questionnaires were used for collecting data. The instruments. used for study were preoperative anxiety scale developed by Y.K. Park, Meizack¢¥s pain scale (5 grade descriptive scale) and Melachian¢¥s behavioral pain scale.
Data were analyzed in SPSS program using percentage, mean t-test, ANOVA and pearson correlation coefficient.
The results were as follows:
1. The mean score of postoperative anxiety was 2.583 (SD= .616),, the anxiety factors in physical threat related to the operation were shown comperatively high.
2. The mean score of postoperative pain intensity was 2.675 (SD= .927), and behavioral pain response was 7.908 (SD=2.419).
3. The relationships between the pain responses and the demographic & surgical characteristics were as follows:
a. There were significant differences in pain intensity according to administration of analgesics, admission duration and operation site (P= .027, P= .0392, P= .0214).
b. There were significant differences in behavioral pain response according to admission duration, anesthesia time and operation site (P= .0003, P= .0064, P= .0001).
4. No significant correlations were found between the. preoperative anxiety and pain intensity, the preoperative anxiety and behavioral pain response (P= .054, P= .486).
